Coach Al’s “Race Report”
Miracle Match Race Series, Waco TX - January 26, 2020
Not a Half Marathon, but I did race the 10K on Sunday morning - there was also a Half-Marathon race that started at the same time. The 10K was promoted as "flat and fast" but due to I35 construction we couldn't cross I35 into Baylor which I guess was supposed to be the "flat and fast" part. Instead, this was the hilliest 10K I've ever raced - it went up through the zoo and the surrounding hills - very difficult!!!
I ended up running a 12:07 pace which is very good for me even without the hills - so, I was very happy ... and sore with some bad knee pain the last mile and a half. They didn't do a great job of measuring the "10K" course since I ran all the tangents and still finished with 6.54 miles. I won my age group, but I was the only one in my age group - kinda sad that out of 457 finishers in the 10K and Half that there were only 2 guys (me and a guy in the Half) in the 70+ age group.
After the race we went to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame which we both enjoyed. Sandy and I had walked the mile from our hotel to the race start, so on the way Sandy got to take photos of Chip and JoJo's Silos and the Magnolia Market and bakery. After the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, we went up the road to West and visited an amazing place, Slovacek's, where I choked down a Big as Yo Face cinnamon roll - I think Sandy also ate something, but I didn't notice since me and the Big as Yo Face cinnamon roll were having a moment!
